The Finer Points
Location
Metalier Coatings are applied by trained professionals at Remarkable Surfaces Christchurch workshop.
Typically, a designer or other specifier will select the finish required with the client, with or without our help and guidance.
Then the joiner or builder making the object to be coated, will contact us for a quote and lead times. The joiner or builder will then arrange for the substrates to be delivered to our workshop. If it is being sent from outside of the Christchurch area, the safest most secure means of transport is by packing into a crate. Ensure to leave a little bit of room in the crate as we will wrap individual items prior to repacking back into the crate, for return transport. By properly packing and protecting the completed panels / items, there is minimal chance of damage.
Samples
On request, we can provide designers and specifiers with business-card sized samples of a variety of the finishes and metals available. These are provided free of charge. As there is an infinite range of possibilities, it is not possible to provide a complete range of finishes. New finishes are also continually being introduced to the range.
Should a larger or bespoke sample be required, there will be a charge.
As Metalier is a handcrafted finish, any samples received are only an indication of the finish. This is a particularly important consideration with any aged metal samples. There will be slightly different reactions between the patina and the metal with each item aged and even across the surface of the same item. This is an intended inconsistency that replicates the natural aging of metals.
Environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity will all affect the outcome of the desired patina and lead to variations in colour and shade. This is the beauty of aging with patinas and ensures every piece is bespoke. Again, it does however mean that any sample received is only an indication of the possible finish visible within areas of the finished item.
Pricing
Metalier is a handcrafted finish and the labour and creativity that goes into creating a bespoke finish are reflected in the pricing.
There are some metals more cost-effective than others and some finishes too.
There are several components to pricing:
-
The metal chosen
-
The finish
-
Whether the piece has edges or an unusual shape
-
Whether there is to be a patina applied to the metal
-
If it is textured finish
-
The substrate
-
Whether masking is required
We are always happy to assist you and your clients achieve the look that you desire.
Durability
-
Suitable for both interior and exterior applications.
-
Resistant to UV damage.
-
Coatings are waterproof but not a waterproofing system. If waterproofing is required, then a waterproof substrate needs to be supplied.
-
Due to the coating being less than 400 microns finished thickness for a high-polished smooth Metalier Coating, it will take on the fire rating classification of the substrate.
-
Metalier Coatings are similar in hardness to the metals from which they are made. However, they will only exhibit the same resistance to impact or compression damage as is offered by the substrate and they will not add strength to the substrate. For example, if the substrate is wood, then the coatings will have the strength of the underlying wood. Care should be taken to avoid chipping or damage by impact from hard objects.
-
As Metalier is a decorative coating, it will scratch the same way as sheet metal. For this reason, we recommend a coaster, place mat or tablecloth is used with furniture that is coated in Metalier.
-
Make sure all acids including vinegar, lemon juice or wine are wiped clean as soon as possible. These acids can etch into the clear coats and into the metals.
-
Metalier metal coatings, unless barrier coated with a clear coat, will, according to metal type, patina naturally over time.
-
If a natural oxidising finish is required, or the metal cannot be touched easily, then polishing with a wax will delay the oxidisation and keep shiny surfaces bright.
Care
Where a clear coat has been applied
Any clear coats applied are easily maintained and should only need dusting with a soft cloth and occasional cleaning.
-
Dust surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth or soft material cloth.
-
If water alone does not clean the surface, use a mild cleaner such as a Dishwashing Liquid – 1% cleaner to 99% lukewarm water. Rinse the surfaces with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
-
All outdoor Metalier applications, including front doors, should be cleaned every 3 months with a mild detergent mix to preserve the coating and, in particulare, to remove salt spray if near the ocean.
-
Test the cleaner you plan to use in a small inconspicuous area to ensure it is compatible with the coating and it is not too strong.
Do NOT soak the surfaces. Do not ever use aggressive chemicals or highly abrasive materials including domestic metal cleaners.
Where a waxed finish has been applied
Metalier Coatings are created using real metal. Metal tarnishes and oxidises with age so your finish will change gradually with time.
-
Dust surfaces with a damp microfibre cloth or soft material cloth. If the surface is unmarked, go straight to step 4 of these instructions,
-
Wetting the surface will accelerate any changes taking place naturally and should be avoided if possible. If necessary, to clean the surfaces. wipe them with a damp micro-fibre or soft material cloth.
-
If water alone does not clean the surface, use a mild cleaner such as a Dishwashing Liquid – 1% cleaner to 99% lukewarm water. Rinse the surfaces with clean water and dry with a soft cloth.
-
Apply a coating of wax such as Briwax and polish with a clean cloth.
Do NOT soak the surfaces. Do not ever use aggressive chemicals or highly abrasive materials including domestic metal cleaners.
